Why did ancient peoples build monuments like Stonehenge and Machu Picchu that are aligned to the Equinox and Solstice? What was significant about these events?

In ‘Your Life as a Project’ (see https://open.substack.com/pub/acping/p/your-life-as-a-project?r=15zae&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web) I discussed Existentialism and the proposal of Jean Paul Sartre that it is useful to consider your life as a project. In that post I also discussed the work of Richard Boyatzis who focuses on sustainable behavioural change.

Boyatzis proposes that we are now living in a dynamic rapidly changing environment that consists of dynamic systems within systems.
