There is an old adage which states that ‘A company cannot proposer unless its community prospers’, but what is the responsibility of corporations to their communities? Is there really any justification for saying that business should be an agent for changing society or even saving the world?
There has been considerable debate on this topic in recent years and business leaders views have ranged from, at one extreme, a belief that businesses should concentrate solely on profits, to the other, a belief that embracing corporate responsibility is the key to a companies’ competitiveness and survival.
Regardless of their leaders' views, American corporations in particular have been under increasing pressure to address the issue of corporate social responsibility.
So what is corporate social responsibility, and what are the implications for business operations as we near the new millennium?
