I first sat Vision Quest many years ago – in the early hours of the morning when the stars seemed to be moving in slow motion across the sky and the dew made me wet and cold it would have been easy to stand up from my circle of polenta and run away – run far far away. Run away from my fears and doubts, run away from my dreams, run away from the deep reality that was unfolding before me.
But something happens when there is nothing to do but sit – something happens to time and perceived reality – a crack opens up and invites you to walk through it – time slows down – many things that seemed so important before became irrelevant.
When the sun finally begins to rise after an agonisingly long wait for the blackness to turn to grey and eventually to the blooming of colour – there is illumination in the soul as the sun warms your bones. Then the drum beats and calls you back to sit in the heat of lodge and come back to the world – …
